Digging through The Hub...

I definitely enjoyed the new piece from Don Gerard, "Acoustic Blog." Good to have you back in the pages again, Don! A nice article about a baseball fan growing up, and watching the neighborhood kids grow-up with it, as well. They may not be the "Niblets," but The Tornados have quite a nice tradition going.

Another nice addition is "The Grapevine." A lot of these stories wouldn't have enough legs to be full-page articles, but as a collection of local information, it's awesome. Both communities and campustown get attention and let the public in on developments in progress. Well worth a read.

Chuck Koplinski has it right about The Dukes of Hazzard, Curtis Orchard, and the so-called "Hollywood Slump." Can anyone else imagine a CU paper without Chuck? I can't.

Josh Kessler turns in an enjoyable read about cross-over performers, and the obligatory take on WILL was solid.

There are a few things I'd shake-up, but otherwise, this paper is getting better. Take my word for it and pick up a copy!

the hub has improved 1000x since they dumped ken pirok as a columnist. i can't be the only one who found his columns both lame and unreadable. his faux-hipster posturings drive me apeshit in general, though. i wonder if being the "cool guy" on city council gets him laid. god, i hope not.

now if only they'd get rid of the pretentious woman who talks about her fabulous dinner parties from the 1970s in every issue, they'd be making some real progress. it's always "back in 1971, when my husband and i were first married, we threw a party for all our friends. we didn't have a dining room table, so we sat on milk crates around a large refrigerator box draped with some old lace curtains and dined on foie gras and drank red wine that i had fermented in a tank in the laundry room."

the hub still pretty much sucks--i always find it funny that the college kids who put together the buzz kick their asses content and writing-wise on a weekly basis--but now that pirok (and the ads for his business that used to litter pretty much every page of the hub) is gone, it's a little bit better. i'd still pick the buzz over the hub any day, though.

Yes, I agree that Pirok's columns were not all that great. All incarnations of that paper are bad in comparison to the current one.

The Buzz has been a pretty good paper since it's inception as a local weekly back in '03, and that's with yearly change of student staff to boot.

We're lucky to have two to choose from!

I was more of a first-base power hitter, but I'll make the adjustment. I'm a team player, Don!

anon,

while i was amused by your comments, i have to admit i find some value in the "at home with linda..." column in the hub.

fer instance, here is but a partial list of fake indie/alt-rock/country bands i culled from her text:

Granola From Balthazar
Eggs and the Accoutrements
the wiggins
Doyle Moore and Dick and I
Royal Crown Derby
Mile High Pie
Cheese Grits
the Jazz Brunch
Milk Punch
Wallis Warfield Simpson
The Zillion Dollar Fittata
Yukon Potatoes

...keep an eye out for these in a future issue of Pitchfork.

...And most of those bands will be seen at the Canopy Club opening up for The String Cheese Incident or the Yonder Mountain String Band...

I think that The Hub has finally pulled ahead of the Buzz in quality. Though I think it's kind of sad that it took so long considering the Buzz is run by a bunch of students that have no idea what they are doing and by the time they do the whole staff changes over. Seth Fein and Mike Coulter continue to be great columns though. If only the editor of the Buzz would do himself and the rest of us a favor by not writing his editor's column. I mean, good lord, he is a really nice guy and all, but his writing is so weak.

Coulter's column is the only thing worth reading in the Buzz and that alone makes it better than the "nothing worth reading" in the Hub.
